Stephen Bland was
born in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada in 1962 to
Shirley and Walter Bland. Stephen is the middle
child in the family, he has 2 older sisters and 2 younger brothers.
Stephen
was educated at Queen Elizabeth High School and
attended college at Northern Alberta Institute of
Technology. He has been studying music off and on
for years.
In 1995, Stephen was in a severe accident
and was thrown through a
windshield of a car while walking down the street,
which left him bedridden for a month. Stephen
considered this a life changing event as the
accident changed his life dramatically. To get through
this crisis
Stephen pulled his banjo out of the closet for
therapy, this was a foreshadowing of his
book
writing career and love
of
music.
In 1996, he
met his mentors. Alan Munde and Joe Carr, who are
teachers at
South Plains College and they recommended their College,
as a good school for learning commercial music. After
this second life
changing event he decided to see how far he
could go with this 5-string banjo.
Four
years later Stephen is perfecting his banjo
technique, and learning the stand-up bass at one
of the foremost commercial music programs in the
United States. He is working towards his twentieth
book and owns a construction company out of
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he currently
resides with his daughter Stephanie, who he feels she
is his greatest accomplishment.
